I was a child of the Great Depression
it shaped me for the rest of my life,
dirt poor, white trash, were the labels I wore
I had one good dress
all the seams were in place
don't let it get dirty
minded mama
it's your best and we can't give you more
learning to accept without question
that's what I did
always on the go traveling here and there
so many schools , new faces,
from the age of 4 to 14, just acquiesce,
I wondered where and when would it end
mama and daddy with their sweet smiles
always made me feel so special
we would travel far on a dusty train for me to ride
pretty grandma knitting her colorful sweaters
sang me lullabies When Irish eyes are smiling
sleep baby sleep don't cry
that's a Russian lullaby.
your mama will hold you and keep you safe
your daddy will always be your support
love will come hard ,but you will endure
yes I was child of the Great Depression
I wouldn't change it for the world.
